Your First 30 Days in Singapore: The Arrival Checklist That's in the Right Order

The pre-move checklist gets you onto the plane; this is the other half — the 30 days after you land, in the order that actually works. Singapore rewards sequence: half the tasks below unlock the next one, and doing them out of order is where new arrivals lose weeks. Week 1 — identity before everything

• Singpass — register the moment you're eligible. It is the national digital ID and the key to government services, utilities and increasingly banks.
• A +65 SIM on day one — every form in this country asks for a local number.
• Bank account (DBS/POSB, OCBC or UOB): pass + passport + employer letter usually does it, often in-app within a day. Ask for PayNow — it's how Singapore pays each other, landlords included. US catch: FATCA means extra forms and occasional slower onboarding for US persons; bring patience, not alarm.

Week 2 — the flat hunt, compressed

Book your viewings into two intensive weekends; good units go in days. Choose the commute before the flat — shortlist by MRT line, then by unit. The clauses that matter: the diplomatic/repatriation clause (non-negotiable for expats), the minor-repair cap, and quarterly air-con servicing at your cost (standard — budget it). Week 3 — services and the paperwork layer

• Utilities: SP Group account via the app with Singpass, ten minutes. Fibre internet installs within the week from any of four providers.
• Insurance gap check: read your employer policy before you need it — foreigners sit outside the subsidised national system, and dependants often need separate cover.
• Tax orientation, not panic: you become Singapore tax-resident by presence; the year's first filing comes later. US catch: your US filing obligation continues regardless — line up a US expat tax preparer now, in the quiet season, not in March.
• Driving licence: foreigners residing here must convert to a Singapore licence (basic theory test + conversion) within the required window — check LTA's current rules. Most new arrivals discover they don't need a car at all.

Week 4 — the settling layer

• Learn your kopi order and your hawker centre. Not a joke — the fastest route from 'relocated' to 'living here' runs through the food, and your neighbourhood aunties are the real onboarding programme.
