How Singapore Addresses Work: Blocks, #02-82 and the Six Digits

By S. Huang, a Singapore local, born and raised here  ·  Singapore Travel Guide By A Local  ·  5 min read  ·  Updated 13 October 2026

Singapore addresses look cryptic for about a day and then become the most efficient system you have used. Three conventions do all the work, and once you can read them you can find a specific hawker stall among a hundred, or give a driver an address in six digits.

The short answer

#02-82 means floor 02, unit 82. Blk 145 is the building. The six-digit postal code identifies the building itself, not the street or the district — the first two digits are the sector and the last four the specific delivery point. For an HDB block the block number is inside the code: Blk 145 Toa Payoh is 310145.

The hash: floor and unit

#02-82 is read "zero-two dash eighty-two": second floor, unit 82. The number before the dash is always the floor, the number after is always the unit on that floor, and the hash is doing the work of the words "floor" and "unit" at once.

Two conventions worth knowing. #01 is the ground floor, not the first floor above it — so a stall at #01-10 is at street level. And #B1 is the first basement level, which in a mall is very often where the food is.

This is why a hawker recommendation reads like Maxwell Food Centre #01-10/11. Two unit numbers joined by a slash means one business occupying two adjacent units, which is usually a sign it has been there a long time and expanded sideways. Our hawker ordering guide uses this format throughout, because inside a centre of a hundred stalls the unit number is the only thing that finds one.

Blk: the building has a number, and the street may not matter

In the housing estates, the building is the primary address and the street is secondary. Blk 145 Toa Payoh is a complete, unambiguous address to any Singaporean, and the road name is almost an afterthought. This inverts what most visitors expect, where the street is primary and the building number counts along it.

Practically: if you are given a block number, trust it over the street name. Blocks are signposted in large numerals on the building itself, and estates are laid out so that the numbers run in comprehensible groups.

The six digits do more than you think

A Singapore postal code is six digits and it points at a building. The first two digits are the postal sector; the last four identify the specific delivery point within it. Most buildings have their own, which is why it works rather like a geocode and why a driver can take you anywhere from six digits alone.

The detail that makes it click: for HDB blocks the block number is carried inside the postal code. Blk 145 Toa Payoh is 310145 — sector 31, block 145. Once you have noticed that, a lot of Singapore addresses stop looking arbitrary.

The six-digit system replaced a four-digit one on 1 September 1995. You will still occasionally see the old four-digit codes on signage, packaging and in older documents; they are dead, and the sector digits are the part that carried over.

Districts: used by property, not by the post

You will see "District 9", "D15" and similar all over property listings. Singapore was divided into 28 postal districts in 1950, and SingPost no longer uses them — but the property industry never stopped, so they persist as shorthand for location and prestige. If you are renting, the district number tells you something about price; if you are posting a letter or getting into a taxi, it tells you nothing. Our areas to live guide talks in neighbourhoods rather than district numbers for that reason.

Giving an address, in practice

Frequently asked questions

What does #02-82 mean in a Singapore address?

Floor 02, unit 82. The number before the dash is the floor and the number after is the unit on that floor. #01 is the ground floor and #B1 is the first basement level. Two numbers joined by a slash, such as #01-10/11, means one business occupying two adjacent units.

What do the six digits of a Singapore postal code mean?

The first two are the postal sector and the last four identify the specific delivery point — in practice, the building. Most buildings have their own code, so it works like a geocode rather than a street or area marker.

Does a Singapore postal code include the block number?

For HDB blocks, yes. Blk 145 Toa Payoh has the postal code 310145 — sector 31 followed by block 145. It is not true of every building, but it is common enough that the pattern is worth noticing.

Why do Singapore addresses start with a block number instead of a street?

In the housing estates the building is the primary address and the street is secondary, which is the reverse of most countries. "Blk 145 Toa Payoh" is a complete address, and block numbers are signposted in large numerals on the buildings themselves.

What is District 9 or D15 in Singapore?

One of the 28 postal districts drawn up in 1950. SingPost no longer uses them, but the property industry does, so they survive as shorthand for location in listings. They are no use for post or for giving a driver directions.

What is the best way to give a taxi driver an address in Singapore?

The six-digit postal code, or the building name. Both identify a single building, whereas a street number usually needs more explaining.
