Getting from Changi Airport to the city is one of the easiest airport transfers in the world — Singapore is compact, the infrastructure is excellent, and every option is safe and honest. The right choice depends on your budget, your group size, your luggage, and whether you have a local SIM card yet. Here is every option, compared.
| Option | Cost | Time to City | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MRT | SGD 1.70–2.10 | 35–45 min | Solo/couples, budget |
| Grab | SGD 20–35 | 20–30 min | Convenience, groups |
| Taxi | SGD 22–40 | 20–30 min | No app needed, groups |
| Airport Shuttle | SGD 10/person | 30–60 min | Hotel door-to-door |
| Public Bus (36) | SGD 1.70–2.50 | ~60 min | Budget, daytime |
The Changi Airport MRT station sits on the East-West Line (green), beneath Terminals 2 and 3. From Terminals 1 and 4, take the free Skytrain to T2/T3 first. Take the train to Tanah Merah (2 stops), then change to the main East-West Line towards the city.
Cost: SGD 1.70–2.10 to central areas with an EZ-Link card or by tapping a contactless Visa/Mastercard directly. Trains run every 7–12 minutes from about 5:30am to 11:18pm. Buy an EZ-Link card at the station ticket machine (SGD 10, including SGD 5 stored value). The full MRT guide covers the whole network if you plan to use it during your stay.
The MRT is the right choice for solo travellers and couples, for anyone on a budget, and for anyone who wants to avoid road traffic. The only downside: one line change and a short walk with luggage. The Land Transport Authority Singapore journey planner gives exact times for your destination.
Grab is Singapore's dominant ride-hailing app. Book from the app, get an upfront fixed price, and meet your driver at the designated pick-up point. Cost to the city is SGD 20–35 depending on the destination and time of day. Journey time 20–30 minutes.
Grab removes all friction — no cash, no language barrier, no negotiating. The catch: you need mobile data to book and coordinate the pick-up. Buy a SIM card at the arrivals hall first (SGD 15–25). For a group of 3–4 sharing the cost, Grab is comparable to the MRT per person and far more comfortable with luggage.
Official taxis queue at marked taxi stands outside every terminal's arrivals hall. They are metered, honest, and immediately available — no app, no booking. Cost is SGD 22–40 to the city including the airport surcharge (SGD 3–6 depending on time; late-night and peak surcharges apply). Journey time matches Grab at 20–30 minutes.
Choose a taxi if you do not want to install an app or buy a SIM immediately — you can be in a cab within 5 minutes of reaching the stand. Singapore taxi drivers are professional and the meters are honest; there is no haggling and no scam risk of the kind found at some other airports.
The official Changi airport shuttle is a shared van service to hotels, costing approximately SGD 10 per person. Book at the Ground Transport Desk in the arrivals hall. It drops you directly at your hotel, which is convenient with luggage, but it waits to fill and makes multiple stops — so it is slower (30–60 minutes) than a direct taxi. Good value for solo travellers heading to a city hotel who want door-to-door service without taxi cost.
Public bus service 36 runs from the airport basement bus station to the city (Orchard Road, Bras Basah, Marina Centre). Cost is SGD 1.70–2.50 with an EZ-Link card. It is the cheapest option but the slowest (about 60 minutes with many stops) and awkward with large luggage. Only worth it if you are on a tight budget, travelling light, and not in a hurry.

For most visitors: if you are travelling solo or as a couple with manageable luggage and want to save money, take the MRT — it is fast enough, completely reliable, and gives you a first taste of how well Singapore works. If you are in a group, have heavy luggage, are arriving late at night, or simply value the convenience, take a Grab or taxi — split between a few people it is inexpensive, and door-to-door comfort after a long flight is worth it.
Either way, buy a SIM card at arrivals first — it makes Grab, Google Maps, and the rest of your Singapore stay dramatically easier. If you are only here for a layover, the layover guide covers how much time you need for a city trip and back.
