Singapore MRT Guide: Navigate the City Like a Local

Singapore's MRT is one of the most efficient urban rail systems in the world. Six colour-coded lines, 130+ stations, trains every 3–5 minutes during peak hours, and fares under SGD 2.20 per journey. It is the correct answer to getting around Singapore for almost every destination in the city. What follows is how to use it properly — not the version in the airport brochure, but the version that locals use.

The Six MRT Lines

How to Pay: The Three Options

EZ-Link Card — the standard. Purchase at any MRT service centre or 7-Eleven for SGD 10 (SGD 5 non-refundable card fee + SGD 5 stored value). Tap in at the entry gate and tap out at the exit gate — fare is deducted based on distance. Top up at station machines, 7-Elevens, and the EZ-Link Singapore app. Keep at least SGD 3 on the card to avoid transaction failures.

SimplyGo (contactless bank card) — tap your Mastercard or Visa contactless card directly on the reader. Charges accumulate daily and are billed to your card. Same fares as EZ-Link. Works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. No setup required — this is the most convenient option for short-stay visitors who do not want to manage a separate card.

Singapore Tourist Pass (STP) — unlimited MRT and bus rides for SGD 10/day, SGD 16/2 days, SGD 20/3 days (plus SGD 10 refundable deposit). Worthwhile if you plan 5+ MRT trips per day. Available at Changi Airport transit lounges and selected MRT stations. The Land Transport Authority Singapore website lists all STP sales points.

Key Stations for Visitors

Changi Airport (EWL) — your arrival point. Free shuttle to Terminals 2, 3, and 4. Changi Airport Singapore connects to the rest of Singapore via MRT with no taxi required.

Bayfront (CCL/DTL) — for Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and the waterfront. The most-used tourist station after Orchard.

Orchard (NSL/TEL) — shopping, hotels, and Orchard Road. The Thomson-East Coast Line has made Orchard a double-line interchange.

City Hall (NSL/EWL) — Raffles Hotel, the Esplanade, and the shortest walk to the Marina Bay waterfront.

Chinatown (NEL/DTL) — Pagoda Street, Temple Street, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, and Maxwell Food Centre.

Little India (NEL/DTL) — Serangoon Road, Tekka Market, and Mustafa Centre (24-hour shopping).

Bugis (EWL/DTL) — Arab Street, Kampong Glam, and the National Library.

HarbourFront (CCL/NEL) — VivoCity mall and the cable car to Sentosa.

Fares and Distance

EZ-Link adult fares range from SGD 0.92 (1–3 stops) to SGD 2.17 (longest cross-island journeys). Children under 7 travel free with a fare-paying adult. Seniors 60+ pay reduced fares with a Senior EZ-Link card. The Land Transport Authority Singapore journey planner at lta.gov.sg calculates exact fares for any journey.

Operating Hours

First trains run approximately 5:28am (varies by line and direction — check the SMRT — Singapore Mass Rapid Transit app for exact first-train times at your specific station). Last trains run approximately midnight to 12:30am. During extended-hours events (CNY, NDP, New Year's Eve, F1 weekend), the LTA announces extended service in advance. Night Rider (NR) buses cover 10 routes on Friday and Saturday nights when the MRT stops — check the LTA journey planner.

The Social Rules Locals Follow

Singapore's MRT has a strong social contract around its use. Knowing the unwritten rules prevents discomfort:

The Local Tip Most Guides Miss

Many Singapore MRT stations have covered walkways from the exit to adjacent buildings, malls, and attractions — meaning zero sun exposure on many routes. The MyTransport.SG app shows which exits have sheltered connections. On hot days (which is every day), the difference between a sheltered and unsheltered exit route is meaningful. Plan your exit accordingly.

The Singapore heat guide covers this and other practical outdoor navigation strategies in full detail.
