The south is where Singapore shows off — Sentosa, the cable car, the harbour — and also where it hides its best walk and its quietest beaches. Both are true at once, and knowing which parts to take seriously is most of the value here.

The south splits cleanly: the Southern Ridges walk and Lazarus Island are unreservedly worth it and cost almost nothing, while Sentosa is worth it only if theme parks, the Oceanarium or a resort day are what you want. The mistake visitors make is giving Sentosa a full day and the Southern Ridges none — reverse that, and the south becomes the best region on the island.

The south holds most of what visitors come for: Sentosa, Mount Faber and the Southern Ridges walk, HarbourFront and VivoCity, Labrador Nature Reserve's coastal WWII remains, Keppel Bay's marina, and the Southern Islands — St John's, Lazarus and Kusu — reachable by ferry and almost empty on weekdays.
Lazarus Island has the best natural beach in Singapore and is genuinely quiet on weekdays — a stretch of sand with no development, reached by a short ferry via St John's Island. Bring your own food and water because facilities are minimal. Kusu Island's temple and shrine make a good pairing. It is the closest thing to escape available here.
It depends what you want. Universal Studios and the Oceanarium are genuinely good; the beaches are pleasant man-made sand with cargo ships on the horizon, which disappoints people expecting Thailand. Go with expectations set, treat it as a resort island rather than a natural one, and it delivers well — especially with children.
A roughly 10km chain of parks and elevated walkways linking Mount Faber, Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridge, including the wave-form Henderson Waves bridge and a forest canopy walk. It is free, largely shaded, and the best walk in Singapore — start early from HarbourFront and finish before the heat.
