Singapore for Conference Delegates: Local Guide

Singapore hosts some of Asia's most significant professional conferences — FinTech Festival, Token2049, Money20/20, Singapore Airshow, and dozens of sector-specific events annually. If you are arriving for a conference, your days are structured. Your evenings are not. This guide covers how to use them.

The Venue Landscape

Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre — the largest and most prominent conference venue. Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre connects directly to the Marina Bay Sands hotel and Shoppes. The location puts you at Bayfront MRT (Circle and Downtown Lines), a 30-minute MRT from Changi Airport. Most of Singapore's central attractions are 15–20 minutes by MRT from here.

Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre — located near City Hall MRT, adjacent to Promenade MRT. The Suntec City mall connects directly. Walking distance to the Esplanade, Marina Bay waterfront, and Raffles Hotel.

Singapore Expo — in the east near Changi Airport. Larger floor space than MBS; less central. Expo MRT (East-West Line) connects directly. The Singapore FinTech Festival uses this venue. Allow 35–45 minutes to reach the city.

Sentosa venues (Capella, Sands Sentosa, Resorts World) — for luxury retreats and smaller executive conferences. Isolated by design; use this for events where the separation from the city is the point.

Three Evenings: What To Do

Evening 1 — Kampong Glam: Take a Grab or MRT (Bugis station) to Arab Street. Walk Bussorah Street (the photogenic street facing Sultan Mosque, lined with restaurants and ambient light), browse the textile and perfume shops on Arab Street itself, and end at one of the rooftop bars in the area (Piedra Negra, LOOF, or the rooftop at Andaz Singapore). This is a side of Singapore that the Marina Bay conference environment does not show at all.

Evening 2 — Local Hawker Dinner: Take a Grab to Tiong Bahru Market (10–15 minutes from Marina Bay or Suntec). Eat at the stalls — char kway teow, chicken rice, Hokkien mee, laksa. Walk the Art Deco 1930s shophouse streets of the Tiong Bahru neighbourhood for 20 minutes afterwards. Return by MRT (Tiong Bahru station, East-West Line). Total cost: SGD 8–15 for dinner. This is how Singapore residents eat; it is genuinely better food than most conference hotel dinners.

Evening 3 — Marina Bay on Foot: What the conference hotel overlooks. Walk from the Merlion Park across the Helix Bridge, around the ArtScience Museum waterfront, to the Esplanade and back. The Gardens by the Bay Supertree light show runs at 7:45pm and 8:45pm (free, outdoor). Do this on the evening with the best weather forecast — Singapore's afternoon thunderstorms typically clear by 6pm.

One Free Day: Beyond the Conference

If you have a full day before or after the conference: the Southern Ridges walking trail (from Labrador Park MRT through Henderson Waves to Harbourfront) gives you forest, elevated bridges, and harbour views in 3–4 hours. MacRitchie Reservoir treetop walk requires an early start (7–9am) but is the most distinctive nature experience available in any major city. Joo Chiat and Katong for lunch after — the Peranakan shophouses and the best laksa in Singapore in one area.

Conference Meals: The Local Alternative

Conference lunches are standard. If you have a lunch break with enough time to leave the venue: most Singapore conference areas have hawker centres within 10–15 minutes by Grab. Near MBS: Lau Pa Sat (10 minutes, excellent for satay in the evening) and Maxwell Food Centre (Chinatown, 15 minutes). Near Suntec: the Hawker Chan chain at nearby locations, or a short MRT to Tanjong Pagar's hawker cluster. Near Expo: the Changi City Point food court is serviceable; for something better, Tampines Round Market and Food Centre is 15 minutes by MRT.
