Singapore Healthcare for Newcomers

Corporate Health Insurance in Singapore: Reading Your Policy

By a Singapore local  ·  Singapore Travel Guide By A Local  ·  11 min read

Singapore's healthcare system is one of the most well-organised in Asia, and understanding how it applies to your specific situation as an expat makes a meaningful difference to your health outcomes and your wallet. This guide covers corporate health insurance in : reading your policy from the ground level.

The Singapore Healthcare Context

Singapore operates a dual public-private healthcare system, with the government maintaining significant control over quality standards across both sectors. Whether you're using a polyclinic, a GP clinic, a restructured hospital, or a private hospital, you're operating within a tightly regulated environment with internationally comparable standards.

Understanding the overall healthcare system is the essential starting point. The three-tier structure — GP, polyclinic, hospital — determines where to go first for any health concern, and using it correctly saves both time and money.

What Matters Most for Expats

The key variables for expats navigating Singapore healthcare are: insurance coverage (what does your corporate or personal policy actually cover, and at which hospitals), GP relationship (having a regular GP who knows your history makes specialist referrals faster and more targeted), and understanding the public vs private cost differential.

Many expats default entirely to private healthcare because it's faster and more comfortable. This is understandable but not always optimal — the restructured hospitals have world-class specialists in many fields, and for complex or chronic conditions, the specialist teams at SGH, TTSH, or NUH may be better than private alternatives at any price point.

Practical Access

Most GP clinics in Singapore can be found on the HealthHub app (run by MOE) or through simple Google searches. For specialist referrals, your GP writes a referral letter and you book directly with the specialist's clinic. Private specialists at the major hospitals usually have websites and direct booking; restructured hospital specialists are booked through the hospital's appointment system.

For urgent concerns that don't require A&E, Singapore has several 24-hour GP clinics including Raffles Medical Group branches and some Guardian Health clinics. True emergencies go to A&E — call 995 for an ambulance or proceed directly to the nearest restructured hospital emergency department.

Getting the Help You Need

Singapore's healthcare system rewards those who engage actively with it — ask questions, seek second opinions where appropriate, use the HealthHub app to access your medical records, and take advantage of the health screening subsidies available at polyclinics even as a non-citizen. The system is there to be used; understanding how to use it effectively is one of the most valuable things a newly arrived expat can learn.
