What you get every week

📍
This week in Singapore

What a local with 40 years of Singapore experience noticed this week. A neighbourhood that's shifting. A policy that just changed. Something worth knowing if you're visiting or living here.

🍜
One hawker find

A specific stall, a specific dish, the exact time to go. Not the stalls on every tourist list — the ones locals actually queue for, and why.

💡
One local insight

The kind of thing you only know after 40 years here. What the tissue paper on the table means. Why that neighbourhood looks cheap on paper but isn't.

🗓️
What's on this week

Singapore events and local moments worth knowing about — seen through a local's eyes, not a tourism calendar. When to go, where to stand, what to eat while you're there.

📍 This week in Singapore
The Tiong Bahru wet market is getting quieter on weekday mornings. The regulars who've been going since 6am for forty years are still there, but the stallholders have started keeping shorter hours. If you've been meaning to go, go this month. The Saturday crowd is a different experience — noisier, more tourist-facing. The Tuesday morning version, before 8am, is the one worth seeing.
🍜 This week's hawker find
Stall #01-32, Tiong Bahru Market. Chai tow kway — the soft version, not the crispy. Order it with egg. Get there before 8:30am or the queue becomes significant. SGD 3.50 for a portion that's large enough for two if you're also having kopi.

The kopi stall three spots to the left does the best kopi I've had at any market in the last decade. Order kopi-c-siu-dai if you want it less sweet.
💡 One local insight
Singapore's MRT has a rule most visitors don't know: you can exit and re-enter within 30 minutes at the same station without paying again. Useful if you get off at the wrong stop or need to use the accessible exit. Works on SimplyGo contactless as well as stored value cards. Not widely advertised.
🗓️ Worth knowing this week
Gardens by the Bay's Cloud Forest dome is running at slightly reduced capacity this month. Wait times are shorter than usual — if you've been avoiding it because of queues, this is a good week to go. Get there when it opens at 9am.

What The Local Loop is not

It's not a tourism newsletter pushing sponsored restaurants or hotel deals. It's not a roundup of press releases repackaged as local insight. It's not AI-generated content pretending to be local knowledge.

It's one person's genuine observations from living here — the same local perspective that informs the travel advisory, the corporate briefings, and the elderly parent planning guides. The newsletter makes that available for free, every week.
