The sequencing rule
Singapore has thousands of available apartments and a handful of places in your child's year group at schools you'd choose. Secure (or at least shortlist) the scarce thing first. If timing forces you to house-hunt before offers land, take a six-month lease or serviced apartment near the centre and buy yourself the right to decide properly — a strategy covered from the housing side in the relocation guide.
How the island actually maps
- The East (East Coast, Katong, Joo Chiat, Tanjong Rhu): serves the major eastern campuses well, with sea-adjacent living, superb food and quick airport access. The classic pairing for families at east-side schools; a punishing commute to western campuses.
- The North (Woodlands and surrounds): built around the big American-curriculum presence in the north. Suburban, spacious, good value — and genuinely far from the city centre, which matters for the working parent's commute in the other direction.
- Central-West belt (Holland Village, Bukit Timah, Clementi, Dover): the densest cluster of international campuses on the island sits along this corridor, which is why Holland Village and Bukit Timah are perennial expat-family defaults: leafy, well-served, school-adjacent. Priced accordingly.
- Novena, Newton and the central north-south spine: the balance play — central living with workable reach to campuses in several directions, excellent MRT and healthcare density. Buses, MRT and the commute reality
School buses cover most of the island and are the default for most families — budget them properly (they're itemised in the fees guide) and ask schools for the route time from your candidate neighbourhoods, not the straight-line distance. Older students increasingly self-commute by MRT, which quietly expands your neighbourhood options: a secondary-age child near a direct MRT line to school is a solved problem. Working the trade-offs
- Two schools, two directions? (One child east, one central — it happens.) Optimise for the younger child's commute; teenagers tolerate transit better.
- Both parents commuting downtown? The central spine (Novena–Newton) or city-fringe east beats the deep north or far east for household-total commute minutes.

- Posting length uncertain? Prioritise neighbourhoods that work without the school — near an MRT line, near food, near a park — so a school transfer doesn't strand you somewhere that only made sense for a campus.
The decision in one afternoon
Shortlist schools with availability, get real route times from their transport offices, overlay the neighbourhoods above, and walk the two or three finalists at school-run hour. Families do this from overseas by proxy all the time — it's precisely the errand a local on retainer runs in a week, with photos and a verdict, before you've signed anything.
Three real-world pairings
A family at an East Coast campus taking a Katong shophouse-belt condo gets a sub-15-minute run, weekend beach access and some of the island's best food — the east working as designed. A family split between a central-west campus and a downtown office lands best around Holland Village or Queenstown: fifteen minutes to school one way, twenty to the CBD the other, with the Botanic Gardens as the weekend backyard. And a family that values central life over campus proximity takes Novena — mornings ride the school bus, parents keep a ten-minute commute, and the neighbourhood's clinics, malls and MRT density quietly remove a dozen small frictions a week. None of these is the "best" answer; each is the same method — school place first, route time measured at 7.15am, neighbourhood chosen to serve the whole household, not just the school run.

Should I choose the school or the home first?
School first, or genuinely in parallel with short initial housing. The school place is the scarce resource; apartments are not. Families who sign two-year leases before holding a school offer are the ones who end up commuting across the island.
